  • This is a very common question, and it can be difficult to recognise.

If your child has difficulty passing a bowel motion, the stool is firm or very large, fills the toilet bowl, or you find yourself thinking, “How did that come out of a child?”, constipation may be present.

Faecal smearing or faecal incontinence can also be a sign of underlying constipation.

Assessment includes structured review of bowel patterns to determine whether constipation is contributing to continence concerns.

  • Yes. Constipation is a common contributing factor to both daytime and night-time urinary continence difficulties. When the bowel is full, it can place pressure on the bladder and affect bladder signalling.

Addressing constipation often improves urgency, leakage, withholding behaviours, and toileting avoidance.

  • Yes. Support may include school visits, structured routine planning, staff guidance, and alignment with NDIS documentation where applicable. Consistency across home and school is central to continence progress.

  • Continence Buddy is located in Mandurah, WA, Australia. Telehealth options allow continence care to be provided anywhere, meaning those living anywhere can access this service. For rural and regional clients, should any physical assessments be required, this is usually completed by the child’s GP and results provided to Continence Buddy. Continence Buddy is also able to refer for ultrasounds and abdominal x-rays.

  • While most continence concerns are functional and manageable with structured support, medical review is important if your child experiences:

Persistent pain with urination or bowel movements

    Blood in urine or stool

    Recurrent urinary tract infections

Sudden changes in bladder or bowel control

    Delayed developmental milestones affecting toileting

Significant weight loss, lethargy, or systemic illness

If any of these red flags are present, it is recommended that you seek assessment from a trusted medical health professional, such as your GP or paediatrician.

  • A detailed fees and pricing document is provided following initial contact to ensure clarity regarding service types, delivery models, and funding pathways.

This document outlines private fees, NDIS billing information, and any relevant Medicare rebate details where applicable.
